Black Harm Reduction Conference

We ask for you to join us over two half days to:

1) Re-engage on the meaning and currency of Black harm reduction.
2) Identify ways to protect and uplift our own history of leading this work.
3) Identify ways to ensure that Black people are centered in national and state changes in drug policy, criminal legal, family services, and health care systems by promoting Black wellness as the primary goal. This event will be part of an ongoing series in which we will work to ensure that priorities can be aligned with local and regional issues.

We want to underscore that this meeting is, like our 2018 convening, a safe space for Black harm reductionists and Black stakeholders. We believe that we need that space to work on goals of improving Black community health and well-being to define the role(s) that a Black Harm Reduction Network can play in addressing the pernicious role of anti-Black racism in the nation’s policy response.

About the Black Harm Reduction Network:

Established in partnership with the Legal Action Center (LAC), the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) and the National Harm Reduction Coalition (HRC), the Black Harm Reduction Network was created in 2013 to promote a national dialogue that 1) centers racial equity across the harm reduction framework, including in drug policy, and criminal justice; 2) elevates the history and current role of Black people in the movement; and 3) identifies and advances recommendations to reduce the harms of these intersecting systems on Black people and other marginalized groups.

Since our inaugural meeting in 2017, the term “Harm Reduction” has been so colonized that it is almost meaningless in the face of threats to the health and well-being of Black people in America.
