DESCRIPTION:The training aims to provide participants with the background knowledge and practical skills that they need to address suicidal risk and behaviors in clients in care for substance use disorder treatment. Participants will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and apply practical skills in the following areas: \nApproaching Your Work: Learn how to manage reactions related to suicide and maintain a collaborative\, non-adversarial stance. Acquire the necessary skills to address potential conflicts between a care professional’s goal to prevent suicide and relapse and a client’s goal to eliminate psychological pain via suicidal behavior. \nUnderstanding Suicide: Gain an understanding of the definitions and language used when talking about suicide\, as well as the data that are relevant to addressing suicide in substance use disorder treatment including risk and protective factors\, warning signs\, and the complicating factors of substance misuse\, including opioids. \nGathering Information: Identify key points in treatment where a suicide assessment should occur\, what questions to ask to learn more about a client’s suicidal thoughts and behaviors past and present\, and how to ask them. Participants will practice asking questions in an interactive learning environment designed to help build confidence. The training presents key scenarios\, such as when to seek supervision or consultation and what to do when someone discloses suicidal thoughts during a group treatment session. \nFormulating Risk: Practice synthesizing assessment information into a risk formulation that will help inform next steps in treatment. AMSR emphasizes the importance of using a risk formulation not for prediction but as information to make a collaborative decision regarding recovery-oriented treatment planning. \nPlanning and Responding: Review suggested actions to take based on a risk formulation using resources from SAMHSA’s TIP 50 and evidence-based interventions. DESCRIPTION:The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine offers both the Medication Assisted Recovery ECHO and the Co-Occurring Disorder ECHO. This ECHO\, coordinated by the Department of Psychiatry at SIU School of Medicine\, aims to create a network of trained providers with DATA-2000 waivers who will improve access and care for patients with opioid addiction. The Opioid ECHO will also train clinicians who have the DATA-2000 waiver but who are not yet prescribing. Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a hub and spoke educational model that connects specialists in academic medical centers (“hubs”) to primary care clinicians in rural and underserved communities (“spokes”) via videoconferencing. SUMMARY:ECHO-Chicago: Pain Management & Opioid Use Disorder in Older Adults Registration DEADLINE
DESCRIPTION:Adults over 65 years of age are at higher risk of experiencing chronic pain and adverse events from opioids and opioid use disorder (OUD). Older adults are more likely to inadequately report their pain due to age-related health\, which may lead to undertreatment of pain. In the last two decades\, opioid prescriptions to treat chronic pain among older adults increased at a rate of nine times what they were previously. This surge is accompanied with a drastic increase of older adults visiting emergency departments due to opioid abuse\, misuse\, overdose\, and addictions to heroin and cocaine. In consequence\, chronic pain\, opioids\, and OUD have become a major crisis in the United States among older adults.\nThe Opioid Use and Pain Management in Older Adults (I-COPE) program is an intervention that offers providers a set of smart tools for a more effective and efficient geriatric pain\, opioid\, and OUD management. The aim of the I-COPE program is to evaluate integration of shared decision-making\, patient-centered clinical decision support tools\, and ECHO model to address the critical need to integrate effective treatment for older adults with chronic pain\, opioid use\, and OUD. Patient-centered clinical decision support (PCCDS) tools provide clinicians with information presented at the right time and tailored to the individual patient\, improving communications\, care\, and patient-provider satisfaction. Shared decision-making (SDM) is a highly effective collaborative framework when there are many choices and there is uncertainty about the optimal treatment choice.\nECHO-Chicago in partnership with I-COPE Principal Investigators has developed an 8-week curriculum to offer more geriatric clinical content and EHR updates with real-word cases. Each session will include didactic topics delivered by an interdisciplinary team of content experts\, and two 15-minute problem-solving exercises using real-world cases brought by participating PCPs. PCPs will review how they can use the I-COPE Program toolkit with each case. As leaders in their communities and their programs\, in addition to their clinical knowledge\, Implementation Leaders are the “foot soldiers” for The ASAM Criteria implementation process. Implementation Leaders develop awareness about thoughtful planning\, communication and appropriate system change strategies to drive implementation and sustainability\, as well as coaching and supervising others on the Criteria. \n\nEach participant receives 2 hours of coaching calls post training.\nCoaching calls are available for only the six months following the last day of training.
