Recovery during the holidays

The holidays can be a wonderful time of year, but they can also be challenging for people in recovery. If you or someone you love is working toward or maintaining recovery, below are some ways to support and reinforce positive decisions.

  • Plan ahead for parties. Find out before the party if there will be non-alcoholic beverages, or bring your favorite alcohol-free beverage to share. Remember, if you don’t feel up to going to a party, or need to leave early, that’s okay.
  • Know your support systems. Identify who can support you, like a sober friend who is willing to attend a party with you. Have meeting schedules ready in case of urges or cravings.
  • Manage expectations. Recovery is a process that involves change; holding on to the way things used to be can be stressful and disappointing. Remember to keep things in perspective and take time for yourself if you are feeling overwhelmed.
